Editor’s Note: I consider Mike Valente one of my best friends and I consider Ron MacLean one of the best broadcasters this country has ever known. For them to be able to sit down and talk about the business, the game of hockey and everything in between, this was real special for me to watch.
Last Wednesday morning, I just about melted in my seat sitting at my desk at work. Seeing how “Rogers Hometown Hockey” was coming to town here in Winnipeg on the weekend, I thought I’d inquire about interview opportunities. Maybe I could talk to a former hockey player who would be on site? Maybe an organizer of the event itself? But no, instead, I had received an e-mail response with the words, “How about Ron MacLean?”. I couldn’t believe it. So, after a few of my co-workers picked me up off the floor and put me back together, I quickly replied and confirmed that YES, an interview with the longtime host of CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada, Ron MacLean? Yes. That will do. (!!!!)
Like so many of us Canadians, we’ve grown up and continue to watch Hockey Night in Canada. It’s an integral part of this country’s heritage. It’s the culture we breathe. And for someone who has carefully and respectively obsessed over his on-air presence, vast knowledge of the game of hockey, and seemingly life itself – Ron MacLean has been my biggest inspiration when it comes to broadcasting. There is no one better in communicating a stream-of-consciousness like he does. His delivery is natural and it’s perfect.
I conducted my interview with Ron on Saturday afternoon, just about an hour before Hockey Night in Canada’s weekly broadcast began. It was a true honour to walk inside the Hometown Hockey mobile studio and sit alongside Ron at his desk and chat with the legend himself. He is just as remarkably kind as he is intellectual. It was a great moment. I hope you check out the interview!
