As the founder of Shold Media Group, a networking site, I tend to go to a lot of networking events. I try to keep the #SMGmeetups casual and fun, but what I experienced at this event, took that to the next level! I was invited to come check out the Monday Girl Fashion Gala and while I was completely in the wrong demographic for this event, I couldn’t have been more impressed with it. The message, the branding, the organization, the set up, the decorations, everything was simply fantastic. The event was held at Shopify HQ at 80 Spadina in Toronto and the location was completely transformed. The ladies of Monday Girl started this group to help other women feel at ease going to networking events that aren’t stuffy, boring or intimidating. I’ll be honest with you, I was a little intimidated walking into a room of a hundred women and only a handful of men, but for the ladies there, they looked completely at ease, enjoying an open bar and a huge amount of great food and music. The upbeat, fun atmosphere made this feel more like a party than a night of learning, career development and networking.
When you first walked in, you were greeted with a TIFF style red carpet and a handmade custom photo booth. There were loaded swag bags, and a on-site hair styling bar, which sadly I didn’t get a chance to experience. After a little bit of casual mixing and mingling, the MC for the night, Kaitlin Narciso, who is a born natural to MC events like this, started the #girlboss speaker panel. This was a great chat with some fantastic women who shared their stories, how networking has helped them in their careers, advice for the group among other things. They then took questions from the audience which was a big hit as people could get some really good insight from the panel on what was really on their minds. The panel included, Lexi Miles, CEO of WAXON Waxbar, Nancy Chen, Restaruant Owner of Otto’s Bierhalle, Connie Chan, a Marketing Manager at Warner Music Canada and Mel Hwang, a Blogger & Instagram star.
The rest of the night included more mixing and mingling, giveaways from DAVIDsTea, L’Oréal Canada, Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie and a few more. The ladies were able to compile a terrific group of sponsors who all really complimented the event perfectly.
This event was also for a great cause. Monday Girl partnered with the registered charity, Dress for Success Toronto®. Dress for Success empowers women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Each person who showed up donated a piece of work/business attire to the charity and a portion of the ticket sales went to the charity as well. All in all, they raised over $1000!
I urge any ladies of SMG or any women in business who want to go to networking events and meet other like-minded people to sign up for Monday Girl and go to their events. I would buy stock in these events if I could because they are going to become the next big thing in the city. Check out their website, join their Facebook group, follow them on Instagram, make sure you get out to some of their events, it’ll be one of the best decisions you’ll be able to make for your career.
