Taylor Shold: Tell us a little about yourself, who are you and what do you do?
Karla Schaus: I’m a writer and blogger from Toronto. While in university I started a kosher food blog and built a large audience around it. At that time there were almost no other blogs dedicated to kosher recipes, so I had found the perfect niche. After a while I eventually found myself at a point where I felt I couldn’t go as far as I wanted to by focusing solely on food writing, so I started working on more fashion and lifestyle content and added new dimensions to my existing following. Now I work to promote brands both big and small across my online platforms.
Taylor: Why did you want to start your website and what were your first steps in making your idea into a reality?
Karla: I grew up in a rural area where there wasn’t a lot of variety in restaurants but I wanted to try as many different foods as possible. I learned to cook and started sharing some of my recipes online and got a lot of positive feedback from it. The first (and most difficult) step was to just start!
Taylor: What challenges have you faced thus far and how do you overcome them?
Karla: One challenge that I’ve faced was boredom. When I started I tried to be like everyone else and showcase a minimal lifestyle, this worked for me for a little while but I got tired of it so fast- it just wasn’t me! I think by showing my true personality I was able to overcome the boredom that almost drove me to quit at one point.
Taylor: How important is it these days to have a great social media presence?
Karla: Not everyone will agree with me that it’s essential to have a great social media presence. However, it can help you to develop yourself as a person and your business in ways that were unimaginable even ten years ago. It goes beyond just a market to sell to. You can access like-minded people from all walks of life around the globe- people who can help you, motivate you, and challenge you to be the best version of yourself. You can make friends, find partners, build relationships, and work on mutually beneficial collaborations. I can’t imagine life without social media!

Taylor: How can people build their own following? What are some tips you may have?
Karla: A lot of people think that consistency is the key, and to some extent it’s true. You have to keep posting regularly so that people will come back for more but not so much so that your audience gets bored. I think quality over quantity is very important!
Taylor: Where do you see yourself and your site going in the future?
Karla: As mentioned, I started out as a food writer and blogger and I’d really like to go back to those roots and publish a cookbook- that has been a goal of mine for a while now! As for my website I think it would be really cool to feature entrepreneurial articles to help people looking to run their own online business.
Taylor: What’s your advice for someone who is looking to create their own website and build a great social media presence?
Karla: Start right now, there is no time like the present! It’s definitely harder to build a social media presence now than it used to be, but if you are consistent and have an idea that you are passionate about then other people will recognize you!
