Taylor Shold: Tell us a little about yourself, who are you and what do you do?
Andrea Ocampo: My name is Andrea Ocampo and I live in South Florida. I’ve worked as a sports & lifestyle hosts for the last 9 years. I’ve worked with the NHL Florida Panthers , NFL Miami Dolphins and WWE. My latest adventure is working with Feld Entertainment as host for Amsoil Arenacross national tour. I always had a passion for journalism and life took me in the direction of sports.I love that the industry allows me to tell stories, inspire, and make a difference.
Taylor: SMG is all about networking, how has it helped your career?
Andrea: I always say, “No man is an island”! I would have never received my opportunities if it wasn’t for me networking and being aggressive about it. The most important thing about networking is to be authentic about wanting to get to know others. You’re not going to go far if you have a, what’s in it for me attitude. I like to offer as much value as I can connecting people with what they may need. I love offering advice and resources to those that need it.
Taylor: What makes a great on-air person and what can people do to improve their own skills?
Andrea: Confidence and preparation is key. I’ve always been thrown into situations where I had to really know my material and found that if I really put in the prep work it gave me the confidence to make a lasting impression.
Taylor: Standing out in this industry is tough, what can people do to separate themselves from the crowd?
Andrea: It’s all about branding. We’re lucky that in today’s social media world we have control on how we want to be perceived. If you put in the extra work in your branding you’ll see that you will stand out and even get offered opportunities that are in alignment with your career. There are few professionals that take the extra mile. You can create a blog where you give tips or create a podcast. It’s a great way to separate yourself by showing that you have your own thing outside of your on air job.
Taylor: You have a very strong social media presence (that’s how we found you!) how has this benefited your career?
Andrea: This piggybacks off branding. I find that social media has been a game changer. It gives people an inside look into your world and if you curate strong social profiles you’ll see that you can create opportunities outside of journalism. I use social media to promote my motivational series, Morning Coffee and it’s received amazing feedback. I can only thank social media for this kind of opportunity.
Taylor: In addition to your large social media networks, you’ve created WithGutsAndGrace.tv, tell us about that and what are your goals with it?
Andrea WithGutsAndGrace.tv has been my vision for a very long time. It’s a lifestyle & career guidance blog bringing value by offering e-courses, motivation, and business tips. My passion is women empowerment and the site is positioned to create women leaders by offering e-courses in public speaking, tv hosting, social media strategies and more.
Taylor: Finally, what’s the best piece of advice you have for someone wanting a career on-air?
Andrea: Look at yourself as a business as well as an on air talent. An on-air career can be fleeting when there are variables outside of our control. We can be the best at our job as an on-air talent, but contracts run out, new management steps in or you simply don’t get the job. Always be 5 steps ahead and figure out a way to monetize yourself using your on air persona to never be at the mercy of a network or producer. Create something that you will continue to grow prior to an on air job, during and post.
